Death of Sir Edmund Hilary
The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand Inc. (FIANZ) is deeply saddened by the death of Sir Edmund Hillary. Many New Zealanders' hearts were conquered by Sir Edmund when he conquered Mount Everest in 1953. Not only was he an iconic figure in New Zealand but was also highly regarded for his philanthropic activities to the Sherpa community of the Himalayas. He was an outstanding New Zealander of our time. Sir Edmund made us all feel proud of New Zealand. It is indeed a tragic and a sad day for all New Zealanders.
As Prime Minister Rt Hon Helen Clark has said, the legacy of Sir Edmund will live on and inspire new generations of New Zealanders.
On behalf of the Federation and the wider Muslim community, I express my deepest condolences to the family of the late Sir Edmund Hillary.
