Masajid Open Doors To Cap Islam Awareness Week
Press Release 11 August 2005
New Zealand Masjids and Islamic Centres will welcome visitors this Saturday.
Javed Khan, President of the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ), says these events are the high point of Islam Awareness Week, which concludes on Sunday.
Khan said "We welcome everyone to visit our places of worship during the Open Day and learn more about our beliefs and values." The Week was launched successfully on Monday, with excellent representation from central and local government and community and religious groups." Mr Khan said. These included the Minister of Ethnic Affairs, Mayor of Auckland City and members of Auckland's Christian community.
Since then there have been two interfaith events and a number of other initiatives, driven by the theme Getting To Know Each Other. This theme will guide the Muslim community's Islam Awareness Programme until Islam Awareness Week 2006," he said.
FIANZ is a partner in the Diversity Action Programme led by the Human Rights Commission and Islam Awareness Week represents a major event in its ongoing contribution to the Programme. There has been genuine public interest in Islam Awareness Week, evidenced by the number of hits on the website. Mr Khan said "The site has registered almost 17,000 hits since it was launched on 30 July."
The Masjid Open Days will be held in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington and Dunedin. Details are available at the website www.islamawareness.co.nz.
