Islam Awareness Week 2010 begins on Monday, 2 August 2010

30 July 2010

Dr Anwar ul Ghani, President of the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand Inc. (FIANZ), the national Muslim organisation, announced today that Islam Awareness Week will be held from 2-8 August 2010.

The theme of this year's Islam Awareness Week is "Cultivating Positive Emotions for a Healthy Society". Dr Ghani said that "Islam seeks to improve our well-being by teaching us how to develop positive emotions and avoid negative ones. "People with positive emotions tend to be happier, healthier and better members of society", Dr Ghani emphasised. Islamic teachings contribute tremendously in this regard.

Events will be held around New Zealand during the Islam Awareness Week including Open Days at most of the Masajid (Mosques) and Islamic Centres on Saturday, 7 August 2010, interfaith panel discussions, Islamic cultural arts and crafts displays and ethnic food fairs.

Islam Awareness Week will be launched by Hon Peter Dunne, Minister for Revenue and Associate Minister for Health, on Monday, 2 August 2010 at 10.30 am at the Wellington Islamic Centre, 7-11 Queens Drive, Lyall Bay, Wellington.
