Hate-Mail Against Muslim Community In New Zealand
Press Release 01 October 2004
The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand is saddened by the recent spate of quot;hate-mail" directed towards some members of our Muslim community here in New Zealand.
The Muslim community in New Zealand is made up of approximately 40 different ethnic groups including Maori and Pakeha and as such, has always seen itself as part and parcel of the wider New Zealand society. We therefore consider recent attempts to target Muslim individuals, families and organisations with offensive and threatening letters as an exception to the otherwise peaceful and harmonious experience of New Zealand Muslims.
The Federation would also like to take this opportunity to speak out against the immature attempts, as implied by this "hate mail", to drive a wedge between various faith groups, in particular the Muslims and Jewish communities. The Federation has long worked together with people and organisations of many faiths which make up the diverse and vibrant fabric of modern New Zealand society. This has enabled us to stand together and denounce such acts of hatred whether they are directed against ourselves or others.
People of the Muslim faith continue to work alongside their fellow New Zealanders to achieve peace, harmony and good neighbourliness within our society.
The Federation hopes that the offenders are apprehended by the Police and that such insensitive and damaging incident will cease as soon as possible.
The Federation also hope that this may serve to further remind us of the need to respect and appreciate each other's differences while building a better future for us all.
